Can I save my old imac?

I have an old 24" iMac ("Late 2006") that is running OSX 10.7.5 (which Apple has told me is as far as it is advisable to go and that's fine). 2.5GB and 210 out of 250GB still available. I have a newer iMac and a tablet and a phone to play with but I'm VERY attached to this machine and actually prefer it to the newer models. Unfortunately it is crashing regularly. Most of my documents were transferred to the new machine when it was purchased and the remainder can be if necessary...Document file was transferred to the newer machine. I have trashed the unused applications that I felt safe trashing.

I know that there are clean-up apps but don't know if that is what I should be doing and, if so, which one might be best suited to my needs. Or should I be trying to do some kind of uninstall-reinstall procedure? Any discs that may have come with the machine are long gone.
