SIERRA TRIGGERS DISCRETE GRAPHICS CARD FAILURE
I have an early 2011 mac book pro. I had bought it brand new, so I have been through many mac updates with it. I had never faced any graphics card failures, as other such macbooks have faced (https://www.apple.com/uk/support/macbookpro-videoissues/) and I had never heard about this issue or apple's repair extension program for these computers described in the above link, until the Saturday 7th January 2017 (10 days ago) when I updated to Sierra. This update was the death of my macbook. It was working completely fine until that date. It seems that this update triggered the graphics card failure that these macbooks have. For a couple of days the computer started showing distorted graphics out of a sudden and after a few seconds it was logging me out every time I was trying to open applications like Mail or Excel and in the end when I opened acrobat reader it just started restarting without ever really opening. All these symptoms are described in apple's web page:
"Symptoms
An affected MacBook Pro may display one or more of the following symptoms:
- Distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen
- No video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on
- Computer restarts unexpectedly".
As you can read in the end of apple's web page "The program covers affected MacBook Pro models until December 31, 2016 or four years from its original date of sale, whichever provides longer coverage for you." . This means on the 13th of January 2017 (5 days after the deathly update) when I managed to take my macbook to apple's service center, I was 13 days late and Apple's Authorized Service Provider originally emailed me the following answer: "WE HAVE CONTACT APPLE TO SEE IF YOUR MACBOOK CAN BE
COVERED IN THE LOGIC BOARD PROGRAM."
At the same time I contacted apple's support phone number and explained the whole situation: They emailed me the following answer: Based on the information you provided, we believe that the following information will help:
Vintage and obsolete products - Apple Support
Two days later the Apple's Authorized Service Provider answer came to my email:
"No longer available parts from the manufacturer.
The machine is out of support time."
For only 13 days Apple could not cover my macbook. Neither for free, nor for any cost Apple could not support my macbook because their problem came up 13 days later, after their extension program ended.
But what annoys me the most, and this is the main reason I write this post is that Sierra caused this malfunction for my macbook. I believe Apple should not allow early 2011 macbook users to download Sierra. Macbook Pro early 2011 should not be suitable for Sierra. If you have a macbook Pro early 2011 I suggest you should not risk updating any more.
Sierra works fine on all my Macs, which include early 2011 model MacBook Pros.
I am in exactly the same situation the only difference being is that I've already had my motherboard changed in 2013 at my expense as the two year warranty had expired. This infuriates me as this issue is well known by apple and I should of been reinburst the first time round. I'm not going to buy the new model as the internals are one unit, which means if the same issue accrues it's an even more costly repair. Having used a Mac since conception I'm said to say that PC is looking like the way to go. I just cannot warrant the expense.
You can most likely use gfxCardStatus to disable the discrete graphics and get more life out of your Mac (I have been doing this to my Late 2011 15" Macbook Pro, and my kernel panics stopped)
I do have to reset it after each boot, and generally I have to do the setting twice in a row to get it to say on integrated graphics. But once set, I do not get kernel panics.
I have the same issue as you. I installed Sierra in Mid February. A week or two later the graphics went crazy. Only when I googled did I find the issue and the fact the program has ended on 31 Dec 2016. If I hadn't upgraded to Sierra I think i would have been fine.
Surely Apple must have some parts left over from the exchange program.
I have been a loyal Apple customer since the 1980's. That's because Apple has always stood behind their products and services and has always tried real hard to do the right thing for their customers. At the current time my immediate family has 16 great Apple products. Having said that, I have not had a peaceful moment since I installed Sierra in my 2011Mac Book Pro. Since I installed this OS in my Mac Book Pro, I have had to call Applecare several times with various crazy issues. At least on my older IMac when I attempted to upgrade to Sierra, Apple provided a prompt saying something like this... "Cannot Install Sierra On This Computer"! OK, I can accept that! I received no such prompt for my Mac Book Pro! Long story short, I had the same problem you did and so did my son with his Mac Book Pro! Therefore, it is real hard for me to believe that this is a coincidence! After speaking to Applecare they advised me to bring my unit into the Apple Store which is what I did. They tested my computer and told me it was a software problem! OK, so they did a clean reinstall. I had a recent back up which I installed at home. The computer came back to normal, so I thought! Five days later the graphics became scrambled on startup. Countless re-starts did not help. So I went back to The Apple Store. They did another test and this time they told me the same thing they told you. "The graphics card failed the test, and parts are no longer available," etc. Then I was apprised that there was a known graphics card problem with the Mac Book Pro! Apparently, there was a notice about this problem, located somewhere in their web site. Huh! This tale is getting more bizarre by the second. If this was in fact a known problem, why was I never notified by Apple that there was such a graphics card problem or that there was even an extended warranty repair program as you eluded to? I do not understand why there was not a prompt stopping me from updating to Sierra on my Mac Book Pro like the one I received on my IMac! At this point, I am very frustrated and disappointed in Apple's handling of this matter. In my view, it is totally uncharacteristic of this incredible company. Oh, how I wish I still had El Capitan in my Mac Book Pro!
What is stopping you from restoring it from your backup?
