iOS 11 Bluetooth on iPad Air

I have an iPad Air running iOS11. update went smooth. devices connect and work over Bluetooth. But occasionally, after I lock the screen or reconnect the headphones, sound still goes thru the iPad and not the headphones (Skullcandy Crusher, btw). It takes a lot of fiddling, powering down and back up, pause/play, to get the sound thru the headphones again. The controls on the headphones work, but sound is still on the iPad. In iOS 10, I could go to control center to pick the speaker output, I don't see a method to do that with iOS 11.
