Invalid Content in Journal
So, the following command works in Sierra to turn off the Journal bit and allow the damaged disk to mount (see thread 1404087):
sudo /System/Library/Filesystems/hfs.fs/Contents/Resources/hfs.util -N /dev/disk3s2
Where disk3s2 is the BSD Name of my damaged disk (use get Info in Disk Utility to find your disk's name).
After the drive has mounted successfully, you can turn journaling back on from the File menu of Apple's Disk Utility.
