How do I get the iPad battery sight to show up ...

So basically I've have my iPad since 2012 and ermm got it out of box couple of months ago and went to go one it today and it's just a black screen and nothing will apear on it the battery sight won't show up to prove that the iPad is dead and it won't tell me if my iPad is charge or not I've tried charging it and pressed the home and lock button for like to minuets and nothing's happeneing does anyone no what it could be doing or Happening it's just a black screen it ain't doing anything or it ain't even showing the battery sign to prove that the iPad is dead and it's really cold I'm kinda worried to
