audio glitches / pops when using external audio...

This problem seem isolated to my MBP Early 2015 ; Retina 13-inch ; 3.1GHz Core i7 ; 16GB memory ; 512GB SSD ; Intel Iris 6100

 

 

I see console messages similar to this one when the glitches, pops occur

I do not experience the glitches and pops or console messages when using Built-In Output

 

The pops and glitches do not occur on older MBP models that I own.

 

I"ve ruled out just about everything but the MBP itself.

 

The problem occurs using different audio interfaces.

 

Roland Duo-Capture Ex  - USB

Focusrite Clarett 2Pre - Thunderbolt

IconnectMidi2+ - USB

Motu Ultralite Mk3 Hybrid - USB

 

I have tried every combination of audio bitrate (16 or 24 bit ; 44.1kHz , 48kHz , 96kHz)

 

I can reproduce with Logic Pro X , MainStage and Reason.  

 

I can reproduce with different IO Buffer Size (64, 128, 256...etc) within the DAW also.

 

I've reset the PRAM ; reinstalled OS.  The problem occurs with El Capitan and Sierra.

 

Any suggestions or ideas what to look at next ?

I found Logic's audio input device was still using the USB interface (Roland Duo-Capture).  Interesting that it generates the overload messages just sitting there. 

Any luck solving this issue?  I am experiencing the same thing, but the pops/glitches occur with every program that transmits sound through my USB audio interface (Steinberg UR22mkII).  The interface worked fine until I updated to Sierra.

No luck.  I suspect a firmware update was applied during the Sierra upgrade that is causing the problem. 

Apple always updates it's I/O drivers with each OS update... USB, Thunderbolt, Firewire (when it was supported). There has been a long history of devices failing to work under a new OS update. MIDI Interfaces, Audio interfaces, Keyboard controllers...etc. Sometimes they're fixed after an incremental OS update, some of them never work correctly again. Of course it's never Apple's fault, except when it is. New Mac models are using cheaper third party hardware suppliers.... so it make's the problem more difficult to pin down. Hopefully the next Sierra update will fix some of the incompatibilities.

Yes,  I agree,  however,  reverting back to El Capitan does not resolve the problem.  Something in the hardware was changed during the Sierra upgrade that injected the problem.  Apple automatically updates firmware during OS upgrades.

About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers - Apple Support

 

I have verified the SMC and EFI versions are the same between my two macbookpro12,1 models.  One works great.  The other experiences the problems noted above.  So something else changed.

Was that a clean El Capitan install?

 

Try this (if you haven't already). Create a new user account, reboot and sign in to the new account. Still have the same problem?
