Mac Mail Mailbox not sorting alphabetically

I'm really struggling with Mac Mail and its Mailbox behaviour. I cannot get the Mailboxes into alphabetical order unless I do it manually. This is a massive bal**che to be honest.

I've read that disabling the account in preferences, quitting Mail then going back in and re-enabling the account should solve it. But hasn't for me. Anyone help??

Mac Book Pro - Yosemite - iCloud Account.

Alphabetically by the name of who is emailing you, or maybe by subject? Not sure what you are trying to sort alphabetically.

You can click View > Sort By > From. Then you can go to the same tab and it will show A-Z or Z-A in the bottom portion. That will organize by the name of the people who are emailing you but will only work like this if you have the person's name as a contact.

Also note that you will have to do this for each Mailbox (Inbox, Sent, Trash, etc...)

Thanks for replying to my initial queries about Mail on the Mac. However you may have misunderstood what my problem is.

I can change the view settings of my Mail messages that I receive or send just like any other email client no problem. However this is not what I am trying to do. I am trying to arrange the actual Mailboxes into alphabetical order. As before:

I don't think there is a solution to this as it is expected behavior.

I have never seen a way to organize the mailboxes on the sidebar except manually. The solution would be to organize them as you go. So if you add a mailbox, put it in alphabetical order. I have also never seen anyone have such a high number of mailboxes that manually moving them would be a time consuming issue.

Sorry there isn't a better answer.

The following worked like a charm:

1. Quit Mail

2. Using an app that allows you to make invisible files visible, go to ~/Library/Mail/V[x]/, where [x] is a number that depends on your version of Mac OS (e.g. V4 under macOS Sierra — but the trick worked under previous versions of the system as well).

3. You will see different subfolders, each corresponding to one email account created in Mail.

4. Open the folder (it contains all mailboxes of the related account) that corresponds to the account for which you want to sort the mailboxes and look for a file named .mboxCache.plist

5. Make it visible (which could also be done by deleting the period "." at the beginning of the name, and/or delete that file. Alternatively, move it outside its location in case you would want to put it back there

6. Lauch Mail again.
