Upgrading from 8 to 16GB of RAM

I ordered a retina MacBook Pro base model. I figured I'd only need 8GB but then after I cast my order into the depths of Apple, I was thinking I should have got the 16GB upgrade. But on one hand, I was wondering if the RAM is user-replaceable or do they solder it on the boards now? If not, I'm hoping I can buy another 8GB stick from a 3rd party.

From what I saw on the release photo's of the internals, the ram is soldered to the board much like a MacBook Air. So it will not be user upgradeable.

It has been confirmed, you must order the amount of memory you expect to use. You cannot upgrade its memory in the future...

Yep, non-upgradeable.  The good news is you'll have a couple weeks to change your mind and cancel the order if you want, seeing as they're backordered pretty heavily now.

I think I'll make due with 8GB then. I don't plan to VM much and I'm currently living with 5GB of RAM on my HP desktop and it works wonders. I'm sure 4GB would suffice.. although that's Windows. Mac OS is pretty bloaty but I'll keep my hopes up that 8GB will suffice on Lion/Mountain Lion.

If you've never had an SSD before, then you're in for quite a treat.  8GB of RAM will be plenty.  That thing will scream.

I've done some testing for fun on some Windows 7 machines.  I setup two identical machines, save for ram and disk:

1 - 8GB RAM, 500GB 7200rpm HDD

2 - 1GB RAM, 128GB SSD

Computer 2 smoked computer 1 in pretty much every task I ran.

The difference is $200 right? If you don't need it there is no reason to pay even $20 more. But I have some feelings about these 16GB features (maybe it's just a marketing catch!). I think $200 worth to pay now and be sure about next operating systems, applications, etc.

Since it's soldered to the board I think it's worth a shot to have a 16GB eventhough I'm on jws1982side. Flash storage is fast enough to have a killer machine with 8GB 1600.

Anyway congrats and have a happy MBP

We all need to do as our life and wallet dictate.  Do not let others bully you into spending $200 for something you cannot justify.

I guess that really would depend on what you're doing. If you're doing a lot of read/writes, then a computer with an SSD would seem faster. Anything memory intensive will struggle once you hit that 1 GB limit, an SSD will not change that. So I guess if just let the computer run and do nothing but run tests or open a few web pages 1 GB will be faster... otherwise you'll constantly run into that low limit of 1 GB.

Obviously, the best of both worlds is having an SSD and lots RAM, which the 'next-gen' MBP has.

I do pleanty that can sometimes tax my PCs and Macs with 3 to 8 GB of RAM, due to lots of multitasking or memory-intensive applications (like Photoshop). I wouldn't want to use any modern computer with 1 GB of RAM... use that up and you're using swap/paging, which is much much slower, even on an SSD.

I digress. With that said, 8 GB is probably more than enough for most things. It is a shame you can't upgrade it yourself if two years down the road you find you want more RAM. The only reason I'd recommend it would be for future-proofing, but otherwise I don't really think 16 GB is needed at the moment.
