space bar not working

Any suggestions on how to correct a space bar that is barely working? I have to repeatedly hit space or backspace to correct the no space between words.

No, I have spilled anything on the key board. No, it is not sticking. It doesn't respond unless I hit it HARD or else focus on using the left side (I'm right handed and so my right thumb is in the natural position to tap the bar).

Using a  2016 MacBook Pro.  Problem started about a month ago and is getting increasing worse.
