How do I download old mail from server?

I just added an account to Mail.* . Mail on my Mac only shows new messages. How do I download the old messages?

(How do I distinguish the Apple Branded Photos and Mail and Message? I used to be able to say iMessage or iPhoto. I can still say MS Word.) . I'm sure "mail" is not a registered trademark.
