"Clean up by" not working properly

Hi,

So, I updated to Sierra on 9/20 and am still having issues with this. I've contacted Apple Support several times, to no avail. Basically, my everyday process consists of resizing my windows to fit my needs, and then hitting "clean up by" to organize everything into said size. Like a million times a day.

However, after updating, this no longer works, primarily in my downloads folder. I click it, it jumps down a few inches and then throws everything on top of each other. I'll have rows of indiscernible stacked images. Making my life very challenging lol. I've tried moving everything out of the folder into a new one, which temporarily works. And then the second time I try to re-clean it reverts back to being a chaotic mess.

Steps that have been taken:

- Cache clearing

- Safe mode boot (problem persists in SM)

- finder.plist replacement

- menial icon changes, etc.

I (foolishly) did not use Time Capsule prior to this. I could simply back everything up and reinstall I suppose. But I'd like to use that as a last resort. This problem doesn't seem to exist anywhere, so finding an explanation has been tough. Not sure how a faulty install could create such an odd problem.

Maxed out iMac 4k, 2015.

Any help would be VERY much appreciated, this is quite frustration. Thanks!

1. Go to Terminal & paste the following code to view hidden files. It will relaunch the Finder such that you'll be able to see hidden files.

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE && killall Finder

2. Once hidden files are viewable, go into the downloads folder(or other folder) in which you're facing difficulty. You need to find .DS_Store file, and delete it. After deleting this file, press + J.

3. Press alt/option key after hitting + J, bottom button will change. Click it when it changes to "Restore to Defaults". This will reset the folder to defaults preferences.

4. You'll find that "Clean Up" option will be back & working properly. Also note that, you need to have "Arrange By" set to "None", or else, "Clean Up By" option will not be selectable.

5. Again open up the terminal and paste the following code to hide hidden files.

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE && killall Finder

Hope that helps. Cheers !

Hi Agney,

Unfortunately, even after deleting the store files, the problem still persists.

Any other suggestions?

Hi there!

Unfortunately ever since I updated to Sierra I've had this problem too, and I use the clean up by feature literally every single day especially for my photo files.

Nothing has worked so far, like you said, and for me, even moving all the files to a new folder hasn't worked lol.

You probably don't wanna do this but the next best thing would be to Arrange by: None and Sort by: (your preferred option) [I chose date created cause I like everything in chronological order].

Sadly, this doesn't fix the actual problem, it only provides an alternative....which I hope is only temporary.

Apple needs to release a patch update for real ugh.

Hey! Thanks for the response, it's nice to see someone else having this issue! I did end up using sort/arrange for a while, and then other memory issues start popping up, making the machine unusable.

I do have an update and "solution". I ended up chatting with Apple support several times, even got transferred to a developer who was also stumped. I ended up wiping my hard drive and starting over, and the problem still persisted. Clearly, Sierra was the problem. Finally made a Genius Bar appointment, who found no hardware problems. I just had them reinstall El Capitan, which is all I really wanted for the past two months, and magically the problem is gone. Thus, it's most definitely a Sierra issue.

I'm assuming this is related to how Sierra now handles storage space. This is an issue they definitely need to fix, as until they do, I'm stuck with an outdated operating system.

FWIW, I'm guessing the issue will be resolved in a future Sierra update. However, I replied to say El Capitan is hardly "outdated".

But it is 'last year's model'

LOL it's actually not quite so "two months ago".

Hello! I have this problem too!

A year has passed. You have found the solution?
