Too many photos on phone! Which is best (easiest to access) for photo back up: iTunes or the Cloud?

Neither a backup to a computer via iTunes nor an iCloud backup allow you to delete the photos from the phone without them being lost due to future backups.

 

iCloud Photo Library allows you to sync to iCloud but you still cannot delete them from the phone without them also being deleted from iCloud. You can potentially reduce the space required on your phone by using the Optimize iPhone Storage option. See: iCloud Photo Library - Apple Support

 

On solution if you want to completely remove photos from the phone is to first import them to a computer. See the "Import to your Mac" or "Import to your PC" section of Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
