LG BE14NU40 External Blu

I just noticed this has happened to me.  I've rebooted, I've switched usb ports, I've tried logging in as another user.  None of this has worked.  I also notice this has happened to others, and I haven't seen anyone  find a solution.  One user said it was solved when he plugged the blu-ray into a usb hub and I tried that.  It didn't work.

Tomorrow, I'll move the blu-ray over to my wife's older iMac, but it it doesn't work there, I don't know if that proves the blu-ray is defective or not because other people are having the problem.  I really suspect the blu-ray is not defective and apple has screwed something up in their OS, but that's just a guess.

I've got a 27" iMac that doesn't come with an internal drive, so this needs to be fixed.  I appreciate any help or suggestions.

PS: I just upgraded to Sierra 10.12 and that didn't solve the problem either.  To be clear, the problem was there before the upgrade.

Uh, I assume you know Apple has never supported Blue Ray. What BR software are you using and have you checked the device with another Mac to see if it works.

I had forgotten about that.  I bought this in December of 2014 and it has worked like a charm since then.  I can't remember if I ever actually put a blu-ray into it.  I've used it mostly for software installs and ripping CD's into iTunes.  Now it is not recognized at all.

That fact that blu-ray is not supported tends to make me think that IOS updates have made it incompatible with my iMac which means I'll have to buy a replacement and this time it'll be DVD.

Still going to try it on my wife's iMac in the next couple of days.

You can try just a dvd but don't waste your time with a Blue Ray dvd. It simply won't work.

Same problem here. This drive used to work, I was watching Bluray videos on it. In fact, it still works if I connect it via a USB 2.0 hub -- just have ripped a CD this way. But for Blurays may be enough -- stutters frequently.

So Apple must have screwed up USB 3.0 mode with this device, either accidentally or deliberately. And I'm still using El Capitan (10.11.6 (15G1611)), so it must be one of the recent updates.

BTW, here is another thread describing the same issue: External BR drive only works in the USB 2.0 mode
