Slow iMac problem with iMovie continual beachball

Just wanted to share an issue with you that started a few days ago ( mid Sept 2017). For some reason I couldn't move the folders on my desk top without the beach ball spinning for about 20 seconds, then nothing.

I tried all the usual tricks by right clicking and changing Grid or Kind to None to no avail, I also tried changing permissions...still no luck. Then a similar problem started with Safari, iMovie , iPhotos and other applications. They all started running slow with the beach ball particularly iMovie which just stuck there for ages until I had to Force Quit. Finder too also I had to keep force quitting.

Anyway after a lot of restarting and head scratching I managed to solve the problem:

I signed out of iCloud Drive, didn't sign back in, despite having the problem for over a week hey presto immediately everything (including moving dragging and dropping files on the desk top) worked!  I even did a quick edit on iMovie and uploaded it to Youtube, no delay of beach ball in sight?

Thought I'd share the fix with you if you've just started having this issue. Clearly a problem between the iMac and the iCloud drive me thinks. All the best.
