iMac Target Display Mode with MacBook Pro

I have a 2016 Macbook Pro with USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports. I also own a 2010 27" iMac, which has the target display mode feature that is activated from the Mini DisplayPort.

I've wanted to use the Target Display Mode feature on my iMac with my new Macbook. Since the only port on the new Macbook is USB-C/Thunderbolt 3, I purchased the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, and then purchased a Mini DisplayPort cable to run from my iMac.

So it goes: MacBook Pro > Thunderbolt 3 to 2 Adapter > Mini DisplayPort Cable > iMac.

But after doing this, it wouldn't work. It says on the knowledge base article that you need a Mini DisplayPort cable to run from the mac to the source machine, which I have, but I can't plug in a Mini DisplayPort into my laptop. I tried switching cables, using a Thunderbolt Cable instead of a Mini DisplayPort cable (even though, from my understanding, they are basically the same thing).

What am I doing wrong? Is my MacBook Pro / iMac inherently incompatible with each other because the MacBook doesn't have a Mini DisplayPort port? Are there other solutions I should consider, like MiniDisplay Port to HDMI?

Thanks everyone

Hi,

You're doing everything right: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204592

Try resetting the SMC: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295 on both machines.

It's worth trying to connect to iMac with USB-C to Thunderbolt2 could works.

Did you get a solution to work? Iv followed the reset SMC instructions and it did not work for me.

From Apple documentation:

"Note: This adapter does not support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays. For more information, visit the Apple Support pagefor the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter."

So it is not supported this way, get a thunderbolt 3 to mini DP cable instead, apple do not do them yet AFAIK, available as third party though

I have that same setup, a late 2010 iMac 27" and a new MBP.  Those iMac's only support mini displayport, not Thunderbolt, so you can't use the Apple Thunderbolt 3 -> 2 adapter even though the cable fits.

You have to buy either a mini displayport -> usb-c cable or a mini displayport -> usb-c adapter.  I bought the latter on Amazon and have been happily using the iMac as a second monitor since.

Here is the one I bought, in space gray to match my MBP.

Dear gtyree, this is very helpful, thanks. I also have a similar same setup -- mid 2010 iMac 27" and new 2017 MBP.

Does it matter what kind of mini displayport to mini displayport cable you use? Which one are you using that works?

Thanks again.
