Can you restart an ipad into airplane mode?

My father accidentally deleted the email in his inbox while at his desktop. He emptied the trash before he realized which email it was that he had deleted. He was able, however, to turn off his ipad before it synced to his imap account, so I believe he should still have a local copy of his emails on that. His Time Machine backup, when viewing Mail.app in TM, is showing a most recent backup of July 7th, for whatever reason, so there are some emails there, but not the most important, most recent stuff.

Is there a way to restart the ipad directly into airplane mode, or some other "do not connect to a network" mode? I'd like to have him be able to reboot his ipad without it syncing at all, because it will delete its local mail cache if it does. I was going to talk him through removing the SIM card and turning off his wifi network, but he isn't comfortable messing with his local network equipment, so I wanted to see if there's a way to handle this purely on the ipad.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
