Messages works on iPhone and MacBook Pro except...

Messages works on iPhone and MacBook Pro except for one new which number works only on iPhone on the MacBook Pro the number, (also in my Contacts), is flagged as, "5205551234 is not registered with iMessage".  Changing the format of number or clicking on the Message icon in Contacts does not help.  The iPhone 5s and the MB. Pro are synced.
