iWatch3 not activating on Verizon

My iWatch 3 (GPS/Cellular) is not able to make calls, receive calls, texts etc without the iPhone.  I have been on the phone with Verizon for 2 hours and was told that the IWatch is really not standalone and that the iPhone needs to be within 300 ft of the watch.  I advised them they just dismantled the entire Apple sales pitch and the standalone capbility is the only reason I purchased the watch.   I was advised that the hardware in the watch is too small for the cellular signal and needs the iPhone,  They also told me that this is a known issue and they were advised directly by Apple.  this is not the Wifi issue.  This is strictly being able to even connect via LTE.

Can someone explain this to me.

thank you

There is a known bug that on some watches they do not switch to LTE when they should and keep hunting for WiFi hotspots. If you use the Explorer watch face and you are not near a trusted WiFi site and turn off your iPhone the Watch should switch to LTE and green bars should show up in the middle of the watch face. When I tried it tonight (AT&T) at first it showed a rex X and said not connected but after about 20 seconds the green dots showed up. I then made call with the iPhone turned off. The Verizon people gave you bad information.
