Back of Watch fell off

This morning when I took my Apple Watch (sports version) off the charger, the back stayed on the charger while the rest of the watch came off, connected to the back through a small ribbon cable. The back just fell off.

I use the watch pretty normally - wear it during the day, charge at night, wear it running for an hour 3 times a week. Don't wear it in the shower or anything like that.

I can place the back on the watch but it eventually just falls off again, and I'm sure the moisture seal is shot.

Looks like the back is just glued on and prone to falling off. Even my relatively ugly Pebble Watch used screws and a rubber gasket. Apple just squirted a bit of glue around the edge, pushed the back on, and called it a day.

Never had this problem with my Apple Watch.

I suggest you make a Genius Bar appointment and take everything in with you to show them. Apple should take care of this.

Take it to an Apple Store, yours is the first report of this occurring that I have seen.

I did. They don't have replacements and told me to take it to my local store to send it in for repair when I get back next week. I'm traveling at the moment.

I was just curious because the design seems very flawed. Body heat, sweat and other moisture will wear down the glue over time, and pulling the watch off the charger puts a bit of stress on the back. Eventually I'd think every watch would fail. I've only had mine for 1 month!

You are not the first and will certainly not be the last, this happened to me also, I went to pull the watch from the charger and the back stayed on the magnet revealing the inside of the watch and the strip that connects it, this will happen to everyone over time because the heat from the battery charging eventually breaks down the glue which holds the back onto the watch, I own the stainless steel version, so there is no particular version not effected, there is a video on YouTube about this problem, all apple will do is glue the back onto the watch again so in a couple of months this will happen again, this is a manufacturing defect, I mean who glues the back onto a watch anyway?

Thanks for the link! I will send feedback. I've always appreciated Apple's design and build integrity - all the more reason I'm perplexed  and disappointed by what looks like a very poor design decision to glue a key part of the watch in place.

I know it's a small thing in the grand scheme of things for one's watch fall apart by design, but part of the satisfaction of Apple products has been pleasure of the object and the integrity of the materials. Apple invites this scrutiny. Maybe they need a video extolling the virtues of gluing expensive watches together and calling it a day? Would Philippe Patek ever do this?

My local Apple store had the same watch in stock but wouldn't replace it, so I'm waiting for a box to ship it in for repair. I'm now wearing it with tape holding the back in place.

You're welcome. Apple will not use retail stock for replacements. From everything that I have read in the forum, there are no replacement stock in stores, so users with problems have had to send their devices in for replacement. Good luck.

the man asked a question, I gave him an answer, he is not alone, if you feel the need to respond to a post read the question asked first. Apple already knows they glued the back on the watch, no need to tell them this.

This is interesting... I have been wondering how easily the back is to remove.  If there is eventually a way to charge from the hidden port, it would be a cool option to remove the ceramic back and replace with a flat piece of metal to make the watch more comfortable and slimmer (I do not use the heart rate sensor and find the bulging back a bit obtrusive).

That sounds like a defect in workmanship. Anyway, I too wear my watch in the same manner. Well,...Ok,...Almost the same manner, considering that I am a cashier at my local WalMart. But, on the bright side, I went ahead and got the Apple Care+ plan on mine to help protect it, should something go wrong with it. And Apple told me when I ordered mine, that if it breaks under normal conditions, that they will send you out a replacement, no questions asked. But, truth be told, what exactly is normal now a days anyway? Anyway, I'd call them and ask someone about that and see what they think. It might mean the difference between getting a new watch, or having to keep the one that you have with the back falling off of it.

Actually lots of companies use adhesives for the backs of watches and if the adhesive is the correct one then body heat and moisture should not break it down. Well unless your body temperature is about 451 degrees F. And there are YouTube videos about everything. But if you feel this is a poor design I would sell your watch and buy a Pebble or something else that meets your standards. It isn't reasonable to stay with a design that you think is substandard. Depending on when you purchased your watch you could contact Customer Service and they might give you a refund.

I was in my local Apple store recently getting some cables when a customer came in with a watch with a problem (not sure what) the Apple guy checked it out, checked the warranty and offered an immediate replacement.

Name one, That charges $740.00 for the watch, no forget that, just name one period, and did you even read my answer, it mentioned nothing about body heat or even returning the watch, it mentioned the heat of the battery charging the watch, that is way hotter than body heat, it is a poor decision to glue the back on the watch, but it does not make a pebble better and my reply once again was to answer someone's question, if you or anyone else do not have the same problem, it does not require a reply.
