Backing up MacBook Pro/ iCloud Drive

I recently accidentally smashed the screen of my macbook pro. I have my system preferences set that all documents and desktop items are backed up to my iCloud drive so wasn't too worried about my stuff, just the cost!! However, I  am now worried that having this setting might mean that when getting repaired, if I get my macbook restored-  incidentally wiping all my files- will this mean that they will also disappear from my iCloud drive.

Fundamentally, my macbook still works so do I need to plug it into my TV and uncheck the box regarding documents and desktop in order to stop the sync i.e so if I delete something from my desktop it won't get deleted in iCloud drive? Or, if everything is uploaded to my iCloud drive will it stay there regardless?
