itunes vs. 10.6.2 finder sound (quicktime?)
not sure where to post this.i was wondering if anyone can confirm to how mac os x renders/plays audio in the finder?
in os x 10.6.x, you can play audio files by clicking on the icon in the finder.
what i'm noticing is that my music files sound way better, louder, crisper and punchier than they do after i import them into itunes. i'm converting 320 kbps, playing with equalization, sound enhancer, etc...
i'm assuming it's just quicktime that is playing, but i thought QT was the engine for audio and video in all programs (final cut, etc.)...
i'm wondering why music sounds "worse" in itunes. the "raw" (unfilered) files played thru quicktime/finder sound so much brighter.
any ideas anyone?
Try turning off equilizer, sound enhancer, sound check. Then make sure itunes volume is set to max. Then itunes should sound the same as the finder playback
i've done all those combinations, turning everything off sounds several decibels lower, nothing like the QT/Finder version....
Do you have the volume turned up all the way in itunes (some people miss that slider adjustment near the top left of the iTunes). It might be a 10.6 issue, in which case I can't help you I'm still at 10.4 for now.
What is the "raw" file you are playing before you import it into iTunes? And how are you importing it into iTunes?
most of the files i'm ripping directly from CD or from FLAC files, VBR/CBR anything from 192-320 kbps.
yes, i'm adjusting volume as well. seems that the closest i can get iTunes to sound to the original file as played from Finder is to turn off EQ, soundcheck and then jack the volume (iTunes volume) all the way up.
i find that kind of strange that the default setting for files played from the Finder is the same or near iTunes with the volume all the way up.
it's not a big deal, it's not that iTunes sounds "bad", it's just that i noticed the files were louder when played from the Finder.
i don't always want to jack up my iTunes volume all the way up, sometimes in need my computer volume up relatively high when i'm listening to music so that my alerts and other program sounds can be heard over the music.
it just seemed that iTunes was processing the sound and it seemed inferior to the default playback from Finder.

I'm not sure I'm getting it yet, but it sounds like you are saying the cd or FLAC sounds better than the compressed version, which is what we would expect.
The finder should be just sending the bits to the soundcard as is. iTunes (with EQ, sound enhancer, sound check off, and volume set to max) should do the same thing. It could be a result of you changing the files from lossless to mp3. To find out, you can try playing the mp3 in the finder (i.e. play the same sound file in both finder and iTunes)
To get "best" sound quality out of iTunes you want all effects off, and volume set to max.
You can adjust the volume of alert sounds using the "Sound" system preference panel.
You're not crazy. I've compared audio in various formats in all media players, and nothing sounds right except for Quicktime, and a other 'pro' audio editing type applications. iTunes, Vox, and others are doing something to the music that is distorting it to a lower quality. I'm not sure if its a hardware issue or something else, I also have an MBP –2007 C2D. It would be cool not to have open each file individually to get proper playback .

Hmm so it turns out I was wrong. Solution was simple – go into Audio MIDI Setup application and make sure your output method is set to 2 channels, 16 bit, and which ever format you prefer. This solved my problem – for some reason Quicktime and other 'professional' apps seemed to be bypassing this separating the audio correctly on their own, while 'consumer' listening apps do not. Hope this helps.
I have been having the same issue and have found the 'finder sound' to be very "fat" with a deep richness and more "separated" stereo imaging. Listening to the same track at the same level (itunes turned all the way up, no sound check or any of the extra stuff on, no EQ), itunes sounds a little more mono or flat than the 'finder sound' almost like listening at a lower bitrate. My only guesses, are that 1. Itunes using using different codecs- or something similar- than the finder, or 2. Itunes has an internal limiter that is smushing the transients in the recording a little but makes up the gain or 3. Itunes plays back the stream in lower/different sampling rate or causes internal clocking errors when playing back.
A user has also mentioned adjusting Audio MIDI settings, but I think those settings are only for Input, not Output, but it could be because I'm on 10.5.8.
I will also echo that it also sounds better(the same as the finder) in Pro Tools and Logic as well.
intersting.
never messed with audio MIDI setup.
the default output is 2 channel 24 bit.
i thought more was better? why 16 bit to make it sound louder/better?
This problem is really driving me crazy. The difference between the Finder sound and iTunes is beyond dramatic. It's not only the level, but an overall richness, clarity and stereo imaging. Wow!
What is happening and why is iTunes degrading the source like this. It is on every piece of music I throw at it. A CD would be the best reference as there is no conversion and it even happens on this.
I have reference mixes for release and I always have to use the Finder to hear what something really sounds like.
Anyone?
If you find anything out please let me know. The richness is quite different. I took an AIF file I saved through GarageBand. The AIF file sounded the same as GarageBand with Finder but the richness was gone in iTunes. (Drop and drag into iTunes or double click and launch iTunes to play). I also converted the file to a mp3. Again fine through Finder and richness gone with iTunes.
This doesn't seem like a file format issue, more a player one since the same MP3 or AIF sounds good through Finder and GarageBand and not as "rich" in iTunes.
Kind of crazy to me.
