Blurry fonts once I upgraded to OS X Sierra

I recently upgrade from OS-X Yosemite to OS X Sierra (2011 MACBOOK PRO)  and now my screen fonts are blurry.  Assuming this may something to do with the graphic card driver

Thanks for checking out the Apple Support Communities for your problem with fonts since you upgraded to macOS Sierra. I will be happy to offer some things to check.


The first thing I recommend is for you boot into safe mode. Safe mode will tell us if the issue is related to a startup item or plugins, and sometimes is all that is necessary to correct some problems. When you boot to safe mode, log in to your account and check if the issue is also occurring in safe mode or not. This help article will help you with the steps for safe mode: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up. If everything is working properly in safe mode, but then is not working after you restart the Mac to leave safe mode and boot back into your user account, please check the section titled "If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode" for troubleshooting steps.


If the issue is also happening in safe mode, you want to test this in another test administrator user account on your Mac. A test user will let us know if the issue is isolated to your account, or system wide. Please check this help article: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. If the issue is being experienced in the test user also, then we need to check the section titled "If an issue happens in more than one user account" from the article provided above which will lead you to this help article: Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue.

I also have a 2011 MacBook Pro, specifically the MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) my fonts are very blurry since I upgraded to OS Sierra 10.12.2 yesterday.

Resetting PRAM seems to have fixed for me  (on newer machines I guess this is called NVRAM here's more  about what it does).  As mentioned below I upgraded  my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) to OS X Sierra yesterday and found I had blurry fonts.  I tried to restart in "safe" mode as suggested but my machine would only "hang" - it would never start in safe mode.  Luckily had my iPhone and could further research what to do if safe mode does not start and the suggestion was to reset PRAM.  Here's what I found on how to reset PRAM if your MBP is stuck trying to reboot in safe mode (after doing this my fonts seem to be a bit better so I never went back to safe mode): 

  1. Hold down power button to turn off Mac Book Pro.
  2. Let it sit for at least 10 seconds
  3. Read ahead then follow steps.
  4. Press start button to begin startup.
  5. After first chime press and hold down these four keys:  the alt (option) key, the command key, the  letter P, and the letter R key...
  6. Keep holding them you will here start chime....  keep holding you will hear a second start chime after the second chime releases the keys and let machine start.  (In total you have heard 3 start chimes, the original  and the two while you were holding these four PRAM keys)

After reboot my fonts seem to be much clearer so I never bothered to go try the booting into Safe mode.

Above I mentioned holding down the alt+command+P+R for two chime rounds, my understanding is that technically one round may do it but some old school folks said to do it twice to be sure.  I don't know truth of that but that's what I did, two rounds of chimes.

I'm adding this addendum in for those that may have two user accounts on their MBP and found that fonts were still blurry in thees other accounts.  I'll admit I am not sure if the above PRAM exercise was the equivalent of hitting with a hammer.  Here's my day: I have another user account on my MacBook Pro which I use for work related stuff only. I logged into that account only to find fonts were very blurry.   In summary my primary admin account for my MBP the PRAM exercise fixed the  blurry font issue, however my non-admin user MBP account was still suffering blurry fonts.  To fix, while logged into my non-admin accuont I went to System Preferences... clicked Displays which will open a panel with two options [Display | Color].  On the "Display" option mine was set to "scaled"  (not sure why).  I toggled  "Default for display" and presto all is clear for this user.  I am not sure if that is all I needed to do for my admin account rather than the PRAM reset.  Good luck you.

Very helpful!! also its worth pointing out that if your desktop picture is blurry, just re-choose it from the desktop & screensaver settings!

I have the same issue on an MBP Early 2011, 15'' (Sierra 10.12.2). I also did a PRAM and and SMC Reset.

The problem goes away, when I switch to standard Scaling for my 15'' Display in the system Settings. But as soon as I switch to 1344x840 or any resolution below the standard (1440x900), i have the same blurred fonts. It gives me a headache, while using my MPB with an external Monitor. For this setup I used to change the resolution on my Macbook Pro to read easier, because my display was more far away. Now since the update to Sierra I am facing the same issue. As I mentioned the problem only occurs, when i switch from the standard resolution to another one. Anyone has further tips? Thanks!
