External HD used for Time Machine back

Hi Support Communities-

My Book for Mac is the external drive used for Time Machine back up.  It's only about half full.  Has been used successfully, but now for the last 2 days, the drive is read only and won't back up the iMac.  Am running OS 10.12.6 Sierra as of Sept. 19th, which other posts seem to blame for the issue.

My Book for Mac is not visible as a mounted device in Finder windows (regardless of Show/Hide or Preference settings in General or Sidebar tabs, which are all selected to view external drives).  However, My Book for Mac can be seen when running Disk Utility, which has run successfully.  "My Book appears to be OK".

Was able to access "Get Info" on My Book for Mac external drive via Disk Utility, by right clicking the Volume to do so - trying to change permissions to read & write.  Strangely enough, under permissions it said "You can only read", but privilege is "Read & Write".

What is the fix from here?  Suggestions from similar posts don't seem to resolve this exact issue, which is critical for back-ups.  Appreciate prompt feedback for a quick and very simple resolution.

Thanks in advance!

I have 2 WD My Book external hard drives used for Time Machine back ups. I have a feeling that the WD software that is pre installed, which is supposed to be Mac compatible, is not, because I had the same situation, it didn't work, so I reformatted both hard drives to Mac Extended and they work perfectly on TM back up. I had an old MY Book from 2007, which had only Windows compatible software on it and I had reformatted it and it lasted until recently.
