Two different Apple IDs Syncing Contacts

My fiancée and I have always had separate Apple IDs. The only link between our iPhones is that we send each other calendar requests.

Suddenly, in the past two weeks any new contacts we are adding to our iPhones have been showing up on both iPhones - but only the new contacts and not existing ones.

We have turned off the option to sync contacts to iCloud. Is there anything else we can do? It seems like a glitch rather than a setting.
