Why is my Junk Button not working???

I'm getting a ton of spam and my junk button (thumb down) does not work at all. I get NO brown emails at all and EVERYTHING comes into my in box.

Please help!! Also how do I open mail preferences-I do not appear to have "mail preferences" but only SAFARI preferences.

If the email is not marked brown in color, then it is not being marked as Spam by Mail. Therefore, the Not Junk button is not functional. It has no way of knowing why something else declared that it was Junk, so it cannot learn anything by you marking it not Junk.

If it is an IMAP-type account (Gmail is like IMAP), then it may be that the email provider is marking them as spam and moving them to the Spam folder (Junk in Mail). They would then show up in your Junk folder in Mail without any action by Mail.

There is also a setting in Mail's Junk Preferences that you can mark to tell it to Trust Junk Mail headers. Again, if something else marked the message with a Spam header, Mail will just move it to Junk, but it has no way of knowing why it was marked as Spam, so it cannot learn anything by your marking it as Not Junk.

For both, you'll have to log into your email provider's web portal and try to mark them as not spam there.

Thanks a lot-I think this has helped. I found the MAIL folder preferences and then found the JUNK box and saw all the settings were off. I applied them and we shall see what happens.

That won't change much, if anything.

Those messages aren't being put in Junk by Mail, so you cannot teach Mail that they aren't Junk. You'll have to teach whatever is putting them there, which is likely your email provider's spam filter.

Your answer is not the answer to the question asked. The question asked is "Why is my junk button NOT working?" I have the same problem. It's an imap account and my JUNK BUTTON aka "thumbs down" is greyed out and does not allow me to mark a message as junk. So what is the answer to this?
