how do I recover my MacBook 13" 2010 after cras...

apple support has helped me erase the hard drive and reinstall El Capitan twice and each time the login asks me for a master password that I never set in the seven years I've owned it. my ex had it for a time and I have no idea what he did. the most it will let me do is erase hd and install. I have been told that the hard drive is bad but I have a weird intuition that's not it. I attempted to reinstall from original disk and the security disabled it. I try to use the El Capitan utilities and the security disabled them. I believe the base system is corrupted but I do not know what to do after all of this. never never had any problem until updating from snow leopard to El Capitan.
