2016 MBP and Dell U2415 Monitor setup questions

Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased the brand new 2016 MBP and I am loving it so far.  However, I wanted to add the ability to use an external display with it.  Did some research on non 4k displays (can't afford the crazy price tags right now) that get the best reviews and came across the Dell U2415.  It is an UltraSharp monitor and comes with a factory calibrated display that is supposed to be quite good.  That's important to me because I do photo editing on my computer with Lightroom and Photoshop.

Does anyone have any experience with this display?  I'm looking specifically for the best method to hooking it up to my new computer with minimal dongles, or dongles that can be hidden mostly in my desk or with a hub.

According to Dell it has the following connections:

  • 2 HDMI(MHL) connector
  • 1 Mini DisplayPort
  • 1 DisplayPort (version 1.2)
  • 1 DisplayPort out (MST)
  • 1 Audio Line out (connect your speakers)
  • 5 USB 3.0 ports - Downstream (5 at the back, 1 with battery charging)
  • 1 USB 3.0 port - Upstream

Which connection would be best to connect it to my 2016 MBP  I'm guessing that in order to use the USB Hub on the monitor that I would need a separate USB cable connected to my MBP as well?

Help me out please...  Only having USB-C ports to utilize with this monitor is confusing me.  I want to make sure that I get all of the correct wires and dongles to have the best experience with this new monitor without my new MBP looking like a science project.

Thanks in advance

Have you looked into the Acer H227HU? It's a USB type-C monitor. Not quite 4k, but it's a great option. Personally, if you can save a bit more, I'd future proof your setup and hold out for a USB type-C monitor.

You could get the same refresh rate (60hz at 4k) with a dongle and HDMI cable, but your setup isn't going to be as clean. Alternatively, if you get a USB type-C monitor, you can hook up standard USB peripherals to the monitor and access them over (albeit over standard 2.0 transfers rates) one cable. I've the LG 27UD88 and I couldn't recommend it enough - so easy and clean.

If you can't wait, then you'll need to get a USB type-C to HDMI dongle. Don't go cheap though, or you'll end up spending more in the long run!

Hope this helps.

Did you end up buying the Dell U2415? I'm trying to charge my 2017 macbook with a regular usb to usb-c cable. However it's not charging. I wonder if it's because there is not enough power delivered.
