Folder issue on Desktop

Bit of a strange issue her-

When I open when of my desktop folders, rather than just having specific files or documents in that I have put there, it has the whole contents of my Desktop. I've even created a new folder on my iMac and left it blank but then when I open it on the MBP it's full of the contents of my Desktop.

I'm hoping that this is just a simple setting/preference.......
