solutions for when Time Machine runs out of space.

What are solutions for when Time Machine no longer makes back ups?  I have seen others with this problem but do not really understand what to do.  Any advice?  Thanks, Mary

If Time Machine runs out of space, you need a larger backup drive.

You could also erase the Time Machine drive and start over, but that will also eventually run out of space.

More information would help. What is the exact message being reported by Time Machine? To determine that click the red icon in Time Machine's Preferences.

What devices are you using for backups? Time Capsule, external hard disk drive, or...?

What does the external USB hard disk drive contain? Normally, there should be one and only one folder at its root level, named backups.backupdb. Is there anything else?

Open that folder. It will contain one and only one folder for each of the Macs that back up to that disk. Does it?

What is the size of the source volume's contents? To determine that, you can use About This Mac > Storage.

What is the backup device's capacity?

Do not alter the contents of the backup. Look but don't touch.

Hello Mary,

To follow up with Barney-15E's advice, Time Machine should be able to automatically delete old backups and keep going. It shouldn't ever stop working. If it does, one likely reason is that it was too small to begin with. There are potentially other factors to consider too. We will know more when you have posted the answers to John Galt's questions.
