Mac mini mid 2011boots up to black screen until...

Mac mini mid 2011, boots up to black screen (No Curser), until I press HDMI source  selector button, for appropriate source again , (which the computer had already switched to at start up attempt), then i get a desk top as normal . It will not respond to a start up from bluetooth devices, as it did before high sierra operating system update .

It seemingly comes on behind black screen, as I have heard voice notifications  .

When I installed High Sierra first attempt, there was a bit of a click sound behind mac mini near the ports. Could it have been a power surge ? Would there be a problem with my HDMI port not initiating ? However , when pressing HDMI source button again there is a picture and it works . Just when I switch to sleep or restart it comes back on a black screen !! Until Source button press.

I reinstalled High Sierra and got to a final screen which it did not reach on first attempt but after apple logo and load bar it just goes black screen again til pressing Source Selector button . I have a Three terabyte time capsule used for back up and music library and a WD hard drive connected to mac mini . All of which appear to work fine . so i am wondering if the problem lies in the HDMI socket behind mac mini ,and that it is not booting from that automatically as it should until iI select it again with remote button!! Anyone got any suggestions please?  Thanks P.
