Printer "Filter failed" for macOS Sierra?

Hi all,

I have upgraded both my iMac and MacBook Pro to the new macOS Sierra and have not been having much problems until recently. As my exams are near, I print notes on my printer, Canon E560. However, recently, certain pages cannot be printed and the printing comes to a standstill. It says "Stopped - 'Filter' failed", and I cannot find a way to resolve this issue. I have experienced this numerous times, and at the start of the printing, it immediately says that the filter failed on my computer, but keeps on printing until a page where it stops. Some pictures on the pages already printed are distorted. Is this related to the macOS Sierra? this applies to both my computers. I have replaced the ink cartridges but to no avail. I have also emailed Canon on this but they are taking a long time to reply me.

I have another printer upstairs in my house, which is my fathers. Thus, I tried printing with it but the words have white lines across it, for some of the pages. This shows that it may be a problem with the document, or the software, macOS Sierra 10.12.

For both printers, it seems like the contents of the pages are pushed downwards as well.

Many thanks,

Ethan

Have you looked for a new driver for your printer? Canon are responsible for updating the drivers for their products to make sure that they are compatible with the new OS

You can read other threads here about Sierra & printer problems.  On my Canon printer, when printing certain PDFs from Preview (or just dragging them to the printer icon), I get the dreaded Filter Failed message.  On Canon's web site we find that they are aware of this, and working on a new driver to take care of it.  In the mean time, I can print these PDFs from Adobe Reader instead.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for informing me about that. I completely was not aware of it!

Ethan

Hi Gerald,

Thanks for sharing this with me, to let me know that I'm not the only one facing this problem. Let's hope that Canon quickly comes out with a new driver for its printers!

Thanks,

Ethan

I had this issue since the upgrade. I just installed the public beta 10.12.1v3 today, and my printing was restored - thankfully! Hopefully this is fully resolved with the release version of 10.12.1. You can sign up for the public beta if you aren't already and see if that helps you as well. Good luck!

I had the same problem on my Epson.  I spent much time reloading drivers, emptying cache in Library, removing all the Epson stuff.  Spent an hour with the Epson tech.  Then I decided to for the most current Sierra beta update--it worked.

It appears to be a problem that will be fixed in the next release. I the mean time, I was able to get my document to print by printing to a pdf and then printing the pdf from Acrobat.

I'm having the same problem and when I visit Canon, there are no driver updates recommended or available.  The image distortion seems to be a .png print error as well.

Thank you for this tip - managed to print what I wanted.

Being a bit non technical I don't understand why this works but printing straight from Word doesn't...

Update your os.

Thanks - this update has just appeared in the AppStore on my iMac.

Same problem. Solved after I installed 10.12.1.

Hi,

I have this issue on our estate, since upgrading to OS Sierra using Preview to print PDF's we experience "Filter Failed" messages when printing pdf documents.

I am running the latest OS, other users are either running the same or earlier versions of the OS with similar results.

We are a HP printing estate and use the HP printer drivers delivered via App Store as the HP site does not have the supported drivers for OS Sierra.

As a workaround we advise users to print via Adobe Reader or some sort of cloud solution.

Im guessing this is an OS or Driver issue on how it handles via the application.

Are Apple looking into this?

Have you updated to the most recent beta? There were two "filter failed" errors, the subject of numerous threads here, and they had different causes. Your issue was probably solved with the 10/24 beta.
