See menu bar all the time

I would like to lock the menu bar so it is on my screen all the time. I already tried to uncheck the auto hide/unhide menu bar option in system preferences but it still disappears in full screen mode.

 

FWIW, this boils down to not being able to see the time. On my old Mac, I loved just looking up to the corner of my screen to see the time rather than having to use my trackpad/mouse to scroll up to the top to get the menu bar to reveal itself. lame.
