Should I upgrade from 10.8.5 to Sierra?

I'm using a Macbook Pro Retina from 2013 still running 10.8.5 or Mountain Lion. Should I upgrade to Sierra and what will be the advantages of upgrading. Things are running a little slow right now, getting more beach balls than ever before and it's running hotter than ever before also. I know I've got my 128 SSD maxed out as I have only 15 gigs of space available.

Would an upgrade in the OS help get things back to normal? Any suggestions as to how or what to delete that will make things run a little faster? Should I just wipe the drive clean and start from the very beginning again?

Thanks,

Bob

Upgrading will not "get things back to normal". Upgrading will improve security and improve system operation. Before upgrading fix the things that are not working "normally". If your issues are due to installed apps, adware, malware... you will still have these issues after the upgrade unless you fix these first.

Post an etrecheck report so that we may try to analyze what may be causing your issues.

Hi,

Yes, I would install Sierra, mainly because Mtn. Lion hasn't been supported with security updates, Safari, iTunes etc. for quite some time now, leaving you vulnerable on the Internet.

Yes, I would backup and do an erasure of the HD, then install the OS, then run updates and see how things run. Then I would install necessary apps from scratch, then restore my data. In this way you'll get rid of all the old "gunk" and know exactly how fast Sierra will run on your Mac before you add anything to it.

Check out Roaring Apps so you'll know ahead of time which apps will need to be updated and which will need to be replaced: https://roaringapps.com/apps

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime: 1:22

Performance: Excellent

There was some adware that I removed but everything seems to be fine.

Can you shed some light on how to back up? Never done that before. Being a musician I use Logic, iReal Pro. I'm a little leery of wiping the drive clean. So after the clean drive, I just bring things that I want back onto the drive? I definitely don't want to lose the Logic and iReal Pro. I have no idea as to how this all would work.

Thank you

You didn't post the full Etrecheck report. I suggest you do that.

Upgrading does not wipe the drive. Backup with either Time Machine or a clone, you can use a cloning software like SuperDuper! or CarbonCopy Cloner. Either way you will backup to an external drive.

Before upgrading:

1. Backup. Anything can happen at any time, so you should always keep a good backup. Make a bootable clone SuperDuper! or CarbonCopy Cloner or use TimeMachine.

2. If you have issues on your present system don't compound them by installing over them. Solve them first then upgrade.

3 Check HDD for free space. At least 8.8GB of available storage. Preferably much more.

4. Check your applications for compatibility here…https://roaringapps.com/apps.

5. Disconnect all peripherals, including USB hubs.

6. After downloading the installer, it will be in /Applications folder. Duplicate it and then drag the copy it to another locations like Downloads, if you want to save the installer.

7. Be patient, the download takes a long time and the install may look like it has died at times. Ignore it.
