Lost files

On my iMac running 10.12.6 I've lost all my desktop files.  Word and Firefox were open at the time. where could they have gone? They are not in trash. I looked into documents but there are no grouped files there and I hesitate to start searching through years of files looking for the ones that were on the desktop.



It sounds like iCloud Drive:

  1. From your Mac, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud.
  2. Next to iCloud Drive, click Options.
  3. Deselect Desktop & Documents Folders.
  4. Click Done.

Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support



I would copy the files from iCloud Drive to a folder other than Documents and the Desktop before doing the above.
