Is anyone else annoyed with the reversion to a drop-down menu for the media type selection (TV, Movies, Music, etc)?
Poor choice for usability - please return to showing all media types - it's not like iTunes is lacking screen real estate in that area...
I like the new way MUCH better. The buttons were too small, and some of the icons were not obvious just by looking at them. Now it plainly says Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, Audiobooks, iTunes U, etc...
If Apple had done it this way first, and then switched to the buttons, you'd be saying, "What's the deal with these tiny buttons?"
Now it's a three step process to change media types (click on menu, drag to media type, click to select - oh, and if you don't have that media type set to display, it's many more steps), versus one step, clicking on an icon. In usability, I give it a thumbs down. If icons weren't obvious, there was still plenty of room to have the icon label with the icon, like they've done now with the drop-down.
I switch media types extremely often, so for me, thumbs down.
At least be accurate... It's TWO click. Click to drop down, click to select. There no "drag." The target is much larger and more obvious. And not having the media type set to display is a one-time setting change, just like with the library button not being set to appear on the horizontal bar.
I switch media types extremely often
If you want to quickly switch between media libraries... Try Command-1 through 9. The first three are Music (1), Movies (2), and TV Shows (3). I'm already using these keyboard shortcuts to quickly switch between my most commonly accessed libraries.
I'll meet you 1/2 way - it's not a "click & DRAG" - but you do have to 1. click to activate the drop down, and 2. move the mouse to the media type selection before you 3. click on the media type... on a large display, for us old folk with bad vision, that's a lot of highly pointed targeting with your mouse...
Just tried the media type keyboard shortcuts, mainly because since iTunes was in its infancy, I've always used cmd 1 to open the main window if it had been previously closed. Thankfully, cmd-1 still opens an iTunes window if it isn't open.
The other shortcuts open an iTunes window specific to that media type - excellent.
Also, if I select a different media type and close the iTunes window, and use cmd-1 to re-open, it reverts back to 'Music' - regardless of the media type I'd had open when the window was closed. Thankfully, if I have a Movie/TV/Podcast selected when I close the iTunes window, then re-open with cmd-1, then go to that media library via keyboard shortcut, iTunes remembers which item was selected that media type.
While the drop-down is -1, the shortcuts are +2, so that's 1 in the plus column. Thanks for the shortcuts!
Absolutely agreed indeed Koly, you beat me to the punch here. It really stinks to high heavens! omg what are these millennials freakin thinking? Ole Steve Jobs must be spinning!!!
Why can't they just leave good things alone. I hate this new drop down menu. Come on Apple, at least give Us the option to choose what We want, or is the consumer no longer right.
Agreed! Please put iTunes back the way it was. Why Apple thinks it's necessary to tinker with functions that work is mind-numbing; a better approach is to leave as-is, and give users configuration options. This new drop-down menu is inefficient. Let users choose how they access features. Whereas previously I could choose which iTunes items to include on a toolbar, now that's gone. Whereas I could choose where to go in iTunes in one click it now takes two. That is definitely not an enhancement; that removes user choice. That's backwards folks. Geez, we're in the 21st-century for software development, and you'd think a company like Apple would fully get UI. Clearly, not. That is not thinking different (or, differently). That's just plain not thinking.
At some point I'll update to 12.4, but I'm not looking forward to the return of the 11.x media drop-down menu. Was very happy to see that removed/refined when 12.x was released, and I thought (and still think) that the customisable icon panel is a clear improvement. I'm gathering other users had some trouble with this?
farquaad, you are perfectly right. I just complained about this in a very critical and harsh way in this forum - and now it appears that they have cancelled my posting. Before that, I still had the chance to be explained that, to create a new playlist, one has to drop down "file" - "new" - "playlist" and after clicking this, a Playlist appears as "Playlist" (under "P") in the middle of the already existing list. So you have to rename this.
But, after clicking on "Music" above left, there is no chance to imemdiately see anymore the complete list of imported titles so far. The central "my Music" list displays only titles of a corresponding playlist. So, after importing a CD, one has to go to the (still empty) renamed new Playlist, click and edit it, meaning that only after this command, the complete import list appears to select the newly imported titles. Ater this, one has to drag those CD titles to the new left column, in oder to get them into the new playlist.
This is silly, complicated and customer-fiendly! Just wonder what goes on in the ebony-tower brains of those developers... Why they cannot leave a product in peace once it works simply and perfectly?
... and with regards to some of my critical messages, which have been censored/deleted, I can only say that if a company/community acts like this, it speaks for itself. I would have a bad conscience. What Apple has achieved with this new iTune update is a total shame, which deserves to be made public in the press - a thing which I am already processing. And no moderator/manager in here should come back to me saying that what I am complaining about may be happening only to me and not to other users! I just complained about two minor features, but just read other forums tro see what all happens to other users, as, for example:
Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash
I could probably learn to live with the drop down, since I'm not a daily iTunes user, but I dislike the fact that the drop down menu disappears when you're viewing a device's screen. What if I wanted to go from viewing what's on my phone to the Apps section to update some apps? I now have to click back in order to get back to the menu?
Click the new BACK button.
The Back and Forward arrows only become available once you have 'visited' or accessed another media type or other area, so another layer of inefficiency just to get a navigation option activated.
Let's say you have gone to Movies and then to Music and iTunes displays the Albums category, and then click on a playlist. The navigation arrows then now go back and forth between those options, not media type. Movies is removed from the sequence.
Certainly not an intelligent or efficient evolution of a UI.
Is anyone annoyed? Is the sky blue? Is Steve Jobs dead?
iTunes keeps getting worse and worse.
Yes, where has the the box on the upper right of the screen gone that allowed one to change the default (awful graphic list) to a tidy text one? Why has the menu bar changed?
New seriously crap version.
What is going on at Apple? Have they hired some Windoze programmers?
Why do they keep breaking things that work.
I just wish there was an alternative.
Oh dear, oh dear.
Never mind that if you were foolish enough to sign up to an Apple Music subscription you probably not only lost much of your music, but had it downgraded to 256k. But thats another story. https://blog.vellumatlanta.com/2016/05/04/apple-stole-my-music-no-seriously/
