Watch series 3 LTE with iPhone 5s

Wish to purchase the series 3 watch with LTE

I have a 5s iPhone

I do understand I need a 6 or newer iPhone but is that only for LTE functionality? Or both wifi and lte?

 

I don't want to upgrade my phone until next year and hoping I can still use the standard connection and then worry about LTE when I upgrade my iPhone

 

Surely I can still if the watch series 3 with GPS can use the 5s?

Any help will be appreciated

In order to pair and set up the Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) - whether with or without initially enabling the cellular feature - the iPhone must be an iPhone 6 or newer model running iOS 11 or newer.

No, that would not work.
