Why Is My Storage Still Full?

I have a MacBook Pro with 750 GB storage capacity. I had about 230 GB of movies on my computer that I deleted to about 190 GB, but even with the 40GB that I freed up, my free storage space only went up by .4 GB. As I was attempting to delete more things to hopefully free up space, I realized that for whatever reason, my Backup storage went up from 80 GB to 120 GB in the span of the hour or so it took me to delete these movies off of my computer. Can someone explain to me how this happened?
