annoying OSx sound effect

hi-

I keep hearing a random sound on my Mac with Osx. version: 10.12.4 (16E195)

I went through the control panel and each sound effect and it is not there. how to I figure out what app is making this sound? its super annoying.

thanks, j

Can you describe the sound and when does it happen?

yea, its difficult to describe. kinda like a multi syllable xylophone sound. i am thinking it is coming form safari but i went through the settings and didn't see any sounds or add ons. really difficult to pin down.

So when Safari is closed, it doesn't happen?

I will have to experiment more. I always have it open in the background. do you think it is possible for safari to make some type of sound when another window has focus? not sure why it would do that. thx

If it's not from something that has focus, then it's from something that doesn't. These intermittent sounds are not always easy to track down. Do you have any third party apps that may play sounds, like Growl?

Don really have much at all running and no weird apps that I can think of. Primarily have mail and safari open all the time and some MS word products.

It is the kerplink sound. (Just kidding, I made that up). I have no idea what is causing it to happen.

You can try clearing caches in Safari and see if that helps:

Empty Caches. You can either choose Safari menu > Clear History Or,  if you do not want to remove History go to Safari menu > Preferences > Advanced and check the “Show Develop Menu” in Menubar. Then, on that menu > “Empty Caches”.

It's one of the more ridiculous features of OSX that alerts can be audio-only with zero associated meaning of what they are alerting. You'd think that there'd be a corresponding text message in Notifications -- but sadly, no.

(Apparently no one at Apple has ever wondered what the point of an untraceable, unintelligible audio alert is).

Solution: I leave headphones plugged in (and unworn) because OSX makes random sounds that have zero meaning.
