Time Machine encryption taking a full week

I have a 2TB hard drive and I recently started to backup my Mac with Sierra. The backup was fine, just a few hours, but the encryption is taking forever.

In 8 hours it finished 4% and it is currently 20% done. This means the whole encryption will be done in a week!

Is there a way to expedite this?

I'm not able to partition my hard drive or write to it until the encryption is done...

There is no way to expedite the process. It is probably because you have a lot of information on your Mac.
