Initiating playback

Is it possible to browse for and choose music on the watch and then play it on the phone? For example when the phone is connected to a Bluetooth speaker, is it necessary to initiate playback on the phone Then control play back on the watch? Or can The watch be used to browse for and select the music initially? Or does that only work if you’re using Bluetooth headphones Such as AirPods?

For controlling playback of music from your iPhone rather than the synced playlists on Apple Watch, then - other than by using Siri - it is currently necessary to start playback on your iPhone before being able to control playback on your Apple Watch.
