iCloud Drive Files show up in other folders

Hallo,

I use PDF Expert on my Mac. When I open a file that is in somewhere on my iCloud, it shows up in the folder of PDF Expert. Right now, I have 42 files in my PDF Expert folder showing up, although I actually only have 11 files stored there. On PDF Expert on my iPad, only those 11 files show up. Those 31 other files have a “in Documents” designator under the file name.

What’s up with that? I really don’t like this behavior. It confuses me and makes it harder for me to organize my files. Is there a way to turn this off?

I’m using 10.12.6, iOS 11 and the newest version of PDF Expert on both platforms.

(PDF Expert is actually just an example, this happens consistently with other app folders on my iCloud Drive, like Preview or Pages.)
