time machine wireless

I recently purchased a 3TB WD MyPassport Wireless Pro and am using it with TimeMachine on my Macbook Pro OSX El Capitan.  I have set up TimeMachine so that its able to back up when MyPassport is directly connected to my laptop, however backup does not work wirelessly.  When MyPassport is disconnected, I get the message "Next Backup: When Disk is connected".  Can anyone help to have the WD MyPassport Wireless back up wirelessly; automatically via Time Machine?
