External Hard driver partitioning

Our household has both PC and MAC machines. I recently bought a WD 2T external drive to backup photos and documents as well as to transfer our old Dell desktop to our new Dell desktop. I am wondering whether I should reformat the external drive completely to exFAT or partition it into partially exFAT formatted and partially HFS+ formatted? Is there a preference for how this drive will function for the purpose I will use it for?  I need this to be as easy to use as possible as I am the most computer-literate in the family and that's somewhat of a joke....
