Excessive Heat

My early 2011 17" MacBook Pro has been running very, very HOT lately. The "Fanny" app shows: maximum rpm of 5500 for both fans; fan 1 speed is 5480 rpm; fan 2 speed is 5495 rpm; and CPU temp is 167 ºF. A handheld lasar infrared thermometer shows the temp of the bottom of the case within ~3 inches of the power cord receptacle to be 117 ºF and the hinge area to be 120 ºF.

Additional specs:

2.2 GHz Intel Core i7

8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB  Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB

650 GB of 750 GB free on TOSHIBA MK7559GSXF

Any suggestions??

.

ARG!!!! Sorry!!  l forgot to mention that I'm keeping the Activity Monitor visible at all times. Occasionally, I'll see Safari, Chrome, or Firefox over 100% cpu (but still responding, albeit more slowly), but the majority of the time, the highest %cpu for a process will be under 30% and Idle will be more than 50%.

Use Activity Monitor to Kill Runaway Processes

Use Activity Monitor on your Mac

Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity.

Should the above not prove helpful, then make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple.

Any program running that high is corrupted in some way. Kill all such apps until this is resolved.

[You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.]

Be sure to backup your files before proceeding if possible.

  1. Resetting your Mac’s PRAM and NVRAM
  2. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
  3. Start the computer in Safe Mode, then restart normally. This is slower than a standard startup.
  4. Repair the disk by booting the from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list.  Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
  5. Create a New User Account Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password when prompted. On the left under Current User click on the Add [+] button below Login Options. Setup a new Admin user account. Upon completion log out of your current account then log into the new account. If your problems cease, then consider switching to the new account and transferring your files to it - Transferring files from one User Account to another.
