Dear readers,
I am fully aware that the 4G functionality does not work (yet) in the Netherlands. The LTE frequencies are the same. In theory and as per various forum websites, if you buy a Apple Watch series 3 with 4G functionality in e.g. Germany or France, it should work at the moment a provider will support this function in the Netherlands. It will be just a matter of activating the eSim-card.
Other websites are saying that a Watch bought in a certain country are a 'kind of'-sim-locked to that country and provider.
Before I travel to Germany or France to buy one, I would like to know which of the above is true. I tend to believe the first is true, so that I can buy a Watch without any problems when they support this service in the Netherlands.
Hopefully Apple can also confirm this officially.

Apple Watch (GPS + Cellular) is not locked to any specific country or carrier and has a built-in eSIM that copies information from the iPhone's SIM card.
The built-in cellular features require a carrier plan in your country of use that specifically includes support for Apple Watch (including the carrier activating the device on the plan).
If buying Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) in another country, then you would need to buy a model that supports the relevant LTE and UMTS bands for your intended country of use and your supported carrier there.
There are three different regional versions of Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular), each supporting different LTE and UMTS bands, as detailed here:
I suggest that you contact your intended carrier to ask whether any given model can be used on their network with a plan for iPhone (current or planned) that supports Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular). Note also that the built-in cellular features cannot be used when roaming.
Also keep in mind that the availability of warranty service may be restricted.

The LTE/UMTS bands for Germany, France, UK and the Netherlands are the same, that should not be a problem.
At this moment no Dutch carrier has confirmed any plans to support this, I only suspect T-Mobile would be the first one to support it, so by that time I need to transfer to this carrier to be able to use the features (not a problem anyway).
As it is my first Apple Watch, I do not intend to buy a new one next year, so when buying this one e.g. in Germany or France, I would like that the Watch is ready in case next year the Dutch carriers will support it.
Looking at your feedback it seems that the hardware-part should be OK to buy one at Germany or France.
