Trouble receiving email file attachments

Why do mail attachments such as PDF or Word docs come to my mail inbox as "winmail.dat" files?  Thx for any ideas!

John, thank you for taking your time to reply! I have been a Mac User since 1988 and am slightly annoyed that I can't just have files show up in my mail without having to pay for an app to convert them. I've never had this issue before.  I just upgraded to Sierra last week and am thinking this must have launched me into some other "sphere."  I tried downloading the "free" apps and they default to making me pay every time.  It's just annoying!  I guess I will continue to try all the apps to see if there is one that doesn't require payment.  Thanks again.  PS - Why can't Apple just have a built-in converter?
