Apple Watch Series 1 not reading heart rate thr...

I’m running an Apple Watch series 1 on watchOS 4.0 and iPhone 6S iOS 11.0.1. I want to get notifications when my heart rate goes above 100, know my resting heart rate, and all of the shenanigans that come with the new watchOS, but it seems my Watch is not reading my heart rate throughout the day. It works when I manually “ask” it to by going to the heart rate app, and it works if I’m in workout mode. Otherwise, if I go to the Health app on my iPhone and try to see my hourly rate, there will be no information to show. It only shows the times where I manually selected the heart rate app on the watch or when I was in workout mode. Any ideas?
