New Macbook 12" USB Target Disk Mode

Hello, I'm trying to connect my new Macbook 12" as external disk to my MacbookPro 15" Retina (late 2013) using USB Target Disk Mode as stated in https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204360

I've bought this cable: https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B00PU057JY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detai lpage_o02_s00#productDetails

but unfortunately when I start the Macbook holding the "T" button it shows the USB Symbol on screen but when connected to any MBP USB port, the disk doesn't show in Finder. I've tried also to open "Disk Utility" and the disk is not present and even checking the "System Profiler" under USB nothing seems to be connected.

Furthermore in the new Macbook "Startup Disk" Settings page the "Target Disk Mode" button is not present and I've not enabled FileVault.

What's wrong?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Emilio Federici

USB Target Disk mode does not support the disk for being a Startup drive, just a data drive.

No, I don't want to startup the MBP from the Macbook's disk, I know that's not possible. I'd just want to access its HD as an external drive from the MBP.

When I was talking about "startup drive" option I was meaning on the Macbook itself where I don't have the button to restart it into "Target Drive Mode" but the only way to achieve that is to restart it normally and then push the "T" key while rebooting (which would be a minor annoyance if it'd work!).

And you're aware that the USB-C cable that ships with the MacBook power supply can't be used as a data cable?

Yes, this is why I bought that cable that I linked in mi first post.

It should work. But it could still be that the cable is not working.

Do you have the Apple USB-C to USB-A adapter? If you do you could try that with other USB cords.

I have the USB C-A adapter, what I don't have is a male-male USB-A cable. Must it be 3.0 or a 2.0 is fine (though slower)?

A 2.0 would definitely be slower, but it would serve to verify whether your Amazon cable was the culprit.

Note: USB-A 3.0 cables should have 5 metallic contacts inside them, whereas the 2.0 cables will have only 4.

Ok. Thanks for your support. I'll try that as soon as I get a proper cable. Will let you know if it works.

Hi, bad news: I've got the new cable (USB-A to USB-A) and tried connect using Apple's USB-C adapter but still no luck with TDM over USB. Needless to say that the USB-C port works flawlessly in any other application.

Anyone found an answer to this one? I too have the same problem - trying to recover data from a MBP12 with broken screen.

I bough USB-C data cable (so not using one supplied with MacBook as advised), the other MBP12 does switch into Target mode as required (I can make out USB icon floating about the screen) but nothing shows up on MBP12 at the other side of the cable...

What I can figure out is this. If you have two macs with usb 3 you use a usb c cable. If one other macs only has usb and thunderbolt you need somehow to have an adapter to adapt the usb 3 to thunderbolt. Usb3 to usb 3 can do target disk. thunderbolt to thunderbolt can also. But it can't be done using a regular usb 2.0.

I've got mine working, after much searching . . .  The Apple-supplied cable doesn't work as some have already noted, but a USB 3.1 male C to male A does work.  It has to have 'SS' on the male A part.

I've just received this cable https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B010SFDKC6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_de tailpage_o00_s00 which failed to give me a the drive on my master mac.  Eventually I changed the USB port on the back of the master Mac (2014 iMac) and the MacBook appeared on the Finder.  Hurrah!

Macs are not meant to be this difficult . . .

What's more, the USB cable powers the MacBook while it's connected, so you don't need to worry about losing charge while you are carrying out file operations on the MacBook in TDM.

In my experience, the battery drains faster than the host Mac charges it. Do you experience the same issue?
