Regarding Battery Life

While purchasing Mac, I searched over google, read articles and blogs about increasing battery life of MacBook.

At some places they mentioned like the Mac's are smart PC they know on which power it has to operate. Means if it is connected to Power Adapter as source it will consumes power from power source not from battery even if it is full charged. It is mentioned that this is one of the best way to increase battery life.

Some of them mentioned that charge battery to 80% and mark next charging time once the battery level reaches up to 20%.

I checked on apple website for my Mac the overall battery cycle mentioned is 1000. Today I checked mine it is 7 and I am using laptop most of the time because of my work. So if I charged my laptop for couple of times in a day the life span of battery is (993/(2*365)) = 1 year 3 month and this is not as per the expectation from Mac.

So could you please tell us the above written facts are correct or not, also please let us know the best way to use the battery for longer duration and enjoy the Apple's product.

Thanks in Advance

Hi,

Here's a bit from what I've written about battery usage in the past. Most is relevant to your situation.

"If you run using the power adapter as much as possible, then you're saving "cycles" of which your battery has limited amount of (Apple claims “up to 1000” cycles). Age will also take its toll on a battery, no matter the usage. Some people will recommend running the battery down about 75% at once a month to keep it "exercised" which Lithium Ion batteries do need some of, but Apple has built that in to their charging circuit; after charging to 100% the battery won't charge anymore until it runs down to about 95% (which will occur naturally over time even with it plugged in), then charge it back up to 100%, etc.

Apple doesn’t say there’s anything wrong with leaving your Mac notebook plugged in all the time, nor do they say you need to discharge it ever (unless you’re not going to use your Mac portable long term) so they don’t think it’s a problem either: https://www.apple.com/batteries/maximizing-performance/

If you want/need to use your battery with any frequency, go ahead, that’s why it’s there, to make your Mac portable and able to run out in the field with no power supply available.

You can run your Mac on battery for a little bit, then charge it back up to whatever level you want, and repeat this as many times as you want.

Although, in general, "common knowledge" is that it's not good to run down lithium-ion batteries all the way until they die, Apple doesn't say there's anything wrong with running your battery down to the point the OS puts your Mac to sleep.

In short, you can use your battery any way you want to."

Your facts are correct, but it seems unlikely you'll do two full discharges and two full charges per day, so I think the battery is going to last longer than you've figured. Also, remember that, like all batteries, your Mac's battery is considered "consumable," meaning it does have a limited life. The cost of a new battery, installed, for your MBP is about $200, which doesn't seem too expensive for two-three years and the convenience it brings for portability (no, Macs aren't cheap ).
