Recommend dual monitor setup

Looking for advice on a dual monitor set-up for one of the workstations here.

Current machine is a MacPro (mid 2010) running ElCap with an ATi Radeon 5870 card. Right now it's using two, very old, 23" Cinima Displays.

Using the two mini display ports, can the 5870 push two 27" 4k displays? If not, what monitors can you recommend in the same size?

Upgrading the video card ins NOT an option, as this machine will be replaced with an new MacPro in the next 6 months. I would ideally like to find monitors comparable to the Thunderbolt Displays on the other workstations here, since they will eventually be switched to the new machine. We're just trying to spread the cost a bit over time.

Any thoughts?
